Bad Smell in the Bathroom From Ptrap
|Bad Smell in the Bathroom From Ptrap|
What does the “P-trap” do that I see under my sinks that leads to the drain? I have had many people ask me this question and I have found that about half of people do not know what the Ptrap does and it is really simple and a very smart fitting. You will notice that the ptrap always has water in it. What this does is stop sewer gases and smells from entering your home from the sewer/septic. The gases are not able to penetrate the water. And it is basically as simple as that. If you are noticing that you are getting a bad smell in the bathroom out of your sinks then you may have a problem with your ptrap.
Heres a list of reasons your ptrap could be faulty
- The Ptrap is cracked
- The Ptrap is leaking
- The Ptrap does not exist
Bad Smell in the Bathroom From the Toilet
A bad smell in the bathroom can often times come from the toilet. There are a few different reasons a toilet can produce a bad smell.
- The Toilet has lost its seal. All toilets are sealed to the floor by either a wax gasket or a rubber gasket. If you are getting a bad smell in the bathroom from the toilet than it could be a possibility that your toilet has lost its seal. Flush the toilet and smell along the base for a bad smell. For info on how to change a toilet seal see our article on How do you Install a toilet.
- The bad smell in the bathroom could also be coming from the toilet because there could be mold growing in either the toilet tank or the toilet bowl. If you see mold growing in either the toilet tank or the toilet bowl than you should either buy a new toilet or bleach the mold to kill it.
- The bad smell in the bathroom from the toilet can also be cause by a faulty toilet loosing its seal. A toilet has an internal Ptrap similar to the Ptrap we talked about earlier. Your toilet’s Ptrap could be loosing the water in it and letting sewer gases in to the bathroom.
